Backgrounders on the Bible through Biblical Archaeology

Goliath’s Gath

The end of summer, in year’s past, was usually the time that archaeologists called in reporters to discuss the results of the season’s excavations. Such news conferences have not been as common in the last five years but there were some exciting digs this summer. One is at Gath, one of the cities of the Philistine pentapolis, in fact the largest of the five cities. Aren Maier has been excavating there for much of the last decade and we have had him on the program several times. I remember one interview in particular, at the old YMCA in east Jerusalem, when we stayed there in 1999. The report on this year’s excavation is in Haaretz, and we will be discussing it in an upcoming program.
