Backgrounders on the Bible through Biblical Archaeology

1047-1048 — The Didache

The Didache, also known as the Teaching of the Twelve Apostles, was one of the first Christian best sellers, and one of the oldest Christian non-canonical documents. I had seen references to the Didache from time to time but was fairly ignorant of its significance until I heard Chuck Colson’s Breakpoint Commentary. Then I tracked down my June issue of CHRISTIANITY TODAY, which contained the Will Varner article he referenced in the commentary. And finally I tracked down Will Varner (pictured) to get more information first hand on the Didache. He’s just wrapping up work on his book on the Didache, and it was a great interview.

You can read translations of the Didache at the Early Christian Writings website. For more background, check out the Advent Catholic Encyclopedia and also Wikipedia. As I mentioned, you might say that the Didache was one of the first best sellers of the Early Christian Church. It’s a book that all Christians should know more about.
