Backgrounders on the Bible through Biblical Archaeology

1080 – Gabi Barkay: Jerusalem Update

Gabi Barkay is one of the world’s leading experts on the history of Jerusalem, certainly on the archaeology of Jerusalem. So we took the opportunity of our last interview to ask for his insights on the various excavations currently taking place in Jerusalem. Although Jerusalem never seems to be without some digging going on somewhere, the number of current excavations seems unusually high. Professsor Barkay gave us more of a survey of the digs, but offered comments as well.

Meanwhile, the uproar over the “Tomb of Jesus” continues. I’m a little surprised that, with all of the negative response by so many experts, the Discovery Channel went through with the broadcast. But then again, it’s all about the money and not the scholarship. In case you missed it, one of the best reports was by The Washington Post. But I also liked what Jodi Magness had to say. She’s always on target. A critique in the Christian Science Monitor was very thoughtful. And the satire from the Jerusalem Post was especially ripe.
