Backgrounders on the Bible through Biblical Archaeology

#1263 2011 Excavation Plans

One of the annual traditions that goes back almost to the beginning of The Book & The Spade is the annual January review of excavations planned for the coming dig season. We’ve always been aided by the information compiled by the Biblical Archaeology Review for their January-February issue. And how that information is online so that we can link to it. That’s not the only source, the Israel Foreign Affairs Ministry also maintains a webpage dedicated to excavation volunteer opportunities.

Both professor Schoville and I have participated as volunteers on excavations in Israel. I dug one season at Tel Aphek and professor Schoville dug several seasons at Tel Dan, and at other sites as well. A number of archaeologists have specifically invited our listeners to join their excavations, I’m thinking particularly of an interview with Aren Maier when he was preparing to start excavating Tel es-Safi/Gath. So listeners, the invitation is extended. If you decide to follow through, please let us know.
