1773-1775 Jodi Magness – The Archaeology of Engedi + Qumran and the Dead Sea Scrolls + Galilean Synagogues and Jerusalem
Jodi Magness has been a guest on The Book & The Spade several times before but recently I had a chance to sit down for an extended and wide-ranging discussion on biblical archaeology.
We started off by talking about Engedi. Jodi spent three years as a Field Guide at the Engedi Field School between getting her BA at Hebrew University and her PhD at the University of Pennsylvania. In this conversation she explains why she chose to spend three years on the backside of the desert, at this oasis on the western shore of the Dead Sea.
In the second program we discussed some of the latest news about Dead Sea Scrolls and Qumran and the Dead Sea Scrolls that are not THE Dead Sea Scrolls. She also discussed new perspectives on Qumran that were included in the updated edition of her Qumran book that came out last May.
And finally, in the third program we discussed the now famous excavations at Huqoq, a Galilean synagogue, and her latest project, a book on Jerusalem.
